Makarevich Igor

“I, guided by the methods of Kazimir Malevich, who in one of his creative articles calls us to free the things from their daily, base character, “emancipate” from the crude, realistic content of the painting… I juxtapose the metaphysical object, which is a “freed” object, from the formula of the painting in my representations.”

Born in 1943

Igor Glebovich Makarevich is a leading representative of the Moscow conceptual school. In 1968 he graduated from the art department of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography (VGIK). In the 1970s he entered the “inner circle” of Ilya Kabakov and was an active participant in the “Collective Actions” group organized by Andrei Monastyrskiy. Since 1990 he has worked in a creative tandem with Elena Elagina, creating works with a wide artistic range, from installations and monumental paintings to book illustrations and photographs.
